Presentation Descriptions and Learning Objectives

Keynote presentation: "Trends in Suicide Prevention in 2024"

This keynote address will provide a look at cutting-edge trends in the field of suicide prevention. From epidemiology, to theory, assessment, acute interventions, treatments, and various policy considerations. This presentation will thus provide a valuable overview to suicide prevention in 2024 and going forward.

Learning Objectives:

  • List major epidemiological developments related to suicide.
  • List major theoretical approaches for suicide.
  • Describe key assessment approaches for suicidal risk.
  • Identify key interventions for acute suicide risk stabilization.
  • Describe the proven treatments for suicidal risk.
  • Describe key policy developments in suicide prevention.

Innovative Programs Designed to Engage Hard to Reach Men in Suicide Seeking

This presentation will introduce attendees to some of the unique risks and barriers associated with men's mental health and suicide. The presenter will demonstrate how innovative programs such as Man Therapy and the Interactive Screening Program are being used to reach out to working-aged men and engage them in suicide help-seeking behaviors. The presenter will include research being conducted in her Lab to demonstrate how these programs are being evaluated and scaled for larger and more diverse communities.

Learning Objectives:

  • Summarize risks for suicide among working-aged men.
  • Describe new methods for engaging men in suicide help-seeking behaviors.
  • Integrate techniques and online programs into their existing practice to further enhance suicide prevention among men.
  • Examine current suicide prevention practices with a critical lens to identify new ways of promoting prevention.
  • Develop a plan for next steps to expand current work practices with men to include online innovative programming, such as Man Therapy.

LGBTQ+ Suicide through a lens of Systemic Trauma

Pebble McCleary, LCPC will present information about systemic trauma and their concept of the 5 Evils of Society (colonialism, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and puritanism), using insights from Joiner's Interpersonal Psychological Theory of Suicidality and the Minority Stress Model to assist in the conceptualization of LGBTQ+ suicidality. These frameworks support the perspective that LGBTQ+ suicidality stems from systemic trauma rather than an internal "failing" or deficit. The goal of this presentation is to offer a conceptualization to supporting LGBTQ+ mental health and suicide prevention and intervention, allowing participants to recognize that living in a society that is built upon systemic harm and oppression is traumatic and that LGBTQ+ suicidality is a symptom of systemic trauma.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the impact of systemic trauma on mental health, leading to increased risk of suicidality.
  • Increase understanding of LGBTQ+ suicidality as a symptom of oppression and trauma.
  • Define allyship skills to make societal shifts in order to decrease systemic trauma for the LGBTQ+ community.

Overview of the CAMS Framework for Suicidal Risk

The Overview to the CAMS Framework will highlight key aspects of this evidence-based approach to treating suicidal risk. CAMS philosophy and clinical aspects across suicide-focused care will be reviewed and highlighted with case examples. Key clinical trial research will be discussed with distinct implications for clinical practice when seeing patients who are suicidal.

Learning Objectives

Live Through This

In a series of “snapshots,” Dese’Rae L. Stage shares her experiences with suicidal thoughts (and sometimes more) over the course of her lifetime. She covers family dynamics and the teenage years—the difficult transition from middle to high school, questioning her sexuality; an abusive relationship; divorce; infertility; grief and loss in a pandemic; and how suicidal thoughts cropped up in each. She shows the audience a living portrait reflecting CDC findings indicating that suicide is a response to adversity, rather than mental illness as a singular cause. She walks us down the path that led her to Live Through This and brings the voices of attempt survivors with her through portraits, quotations, and video—literally taking the audience into an interview with her. She discusses major themes that crop up in the stories of survivors, along with the impact the project has made in a number of contexts. Stage implores listeners to open their hearts and their minds to those of us who have literally lived through it, and provides incontrovertible evidence that suicide affects all of us. Audiences can expect a talk that will be revealing, often touching, always honest and, ultimately, hopeful.

Learning Objectives:

  • List social determinants of suicide and give specific examples of how they manifest.
  • Examine personal biases and stereotypes regarding folks with lived experience of suicidality.
  • Analyze the ethical considerations surrounding involuntary hospitalization for individuals at risk of suicide.

Dese’Rae L. Stage, LSW, MSW, is an award-winning artist, suicidologist, activist, and therapist. She created Live Through This, a documentary-style multimedia storytelling series that aims to reduce prejudice and discrimination against suicide attempt survivors. Live Through This reminds us that suicide is a human issue by elevating and amplifying survivors’ voices through raw, honest stories of survival, and pairing them with portraits—putting faces and names to the statistics that have been the only representation of attempt survivors in the past. Live Through This has received media coverage from the New York Times, Associated Press, NPR, CBS Evening News, and more. Dese’Rae produces and hosts the video podcasts Suicide 'n' Stuff (suicide-n-stuff.com) and Grief TV (grief-tv.com). She is featured in a documentary about suicide prevention advocates called The S Word, now streaming on Amazon Prime. Her writing has been published by Cosmopolitan, CNN, and Romper. She lives in Philadelphia with her children.

Pebble McCleary, LCPC (they/them/theirs) is a queer mental health therapist with both lived and professional experience with queerness. They specialize in working with LGBTQ identities, kink/BDSM, non- monogamy, and systemic trauma. Pebble is firmly anti-oppression, utilizing liberation-oriented, transformative justice-oriented, and relational-cultural approaches to decolonize clinical work and uplift marginalized voices. They have taught and presented on LGBTQ and suicide prevention topics at the university, state, and national levels. Pebble prioritizes safety, transparency, and collaboration in their clinical, training, and consultation services, fostering an environment wherein it is okay to ask questions, “get it wrong,” and grow.
