Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives

Lethal means are objects that can be used to inflict self-directed violence. Lethal means safety is an intentional, voluntary practice to reduce one's suicide risk by limiting access to those lethal means. In the military-connected community, firearms is the #1 method used in suicide deaths. Understanding the myriad of voluntary and involuntary safe storage options can improve the safety planning discussion between a provider and their patient. It allows the provider and patient the ability to collaboratively develop a plan on how to limit access to those means, until the risk subsides.

Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss the current data regarding suicide in the military-connected community
2. Identify what are the lethal means and examine why it is important to reduce access to them
3. Describe lethal means restriction and safety planning and identify different methods
4. Identify additional support and resources
