Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives 

Essentials of Oral Sedation in the Dental Office:

A review of safe in office sedation modalities. Discussion of pros, cons, risks, objectives of oral sedation, nitrous oxide, and local anesthesia.  IV moderate sedation and general anesthesia will be covered as informational and for comparison. Both pediatric and adult patient issues will be discussed. 

Proper Pharmacologic Prescribing: 


The prescription drug abuse epidemic; what do we need to know and how to decrease its impact in our community. Review proper writing of prescriptions, disposal of unused medications and protection of prescription pads.

Learning Objectives:

  • How to decide which patients are appropriate for sedation and what modality of care is appropriate.
  • What are the critical areas to focus on for a proper patient assessment.
  • Explain the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the most commonly used anxiolytic drugs in dental practice.
  • Identify patients at risk for opioid abuse.
  • How to manage post-op pain without narcotics.
  • Review proper use and disposal of prescription medications.

Speaker Bio - Marvin Leventer, DDS

Dr. Leventer graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in 1990. He then completed a General Practice Residency and a Dental Anesthesiology Residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in New York. He is a full-time assistant professor at the UMSOD and provides sedation and general anesthesia, with the postgraduate residents. He also practices general dentistry and provides dental services at the University of Maryland Hospital.

Cancellations for Essentials of Oral Sedation in the Dental Office,  and Proper Pharmacologic Prescribing. must be made no later than one week prior to the program date, and refunds are subject to a 10% processing fee. No refund option will be available for cancellations made less than one week prior to that program date. No-shore registrants will forfeit any payment made for the program. CHEP does not offer vouchers for cancellations for these conferences.
