Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives

Burnout is a significant issue for social workers, whose roles often require emotional labor, complex caseloads, and navigating systemic challenges. This interactive virtual workshop is designed to equip social workers with practical strategies to recognize, manage, and prevent burnout. Through a combination of educational content, personal reflection, and group discussions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the causes and symptoms of burnout in social work and develop personalized prevention plans.

The workshop covers key topics such as the stages of burnout, the unique stressors in the social work profession, and personal strategies for self-care. By the end of the session, attendees will leave with actionable steps to enhance their well-being, set boundaries, and build resilience in their professional lives.

High Burnout Rates in Social Work: Burnout is a pervasive issue in social work, with research consistently showing that social workers experience burnout at significantly higher rates compared to professionals in other fields. The demanding nature of social work-- managing heavy caseloads, navigating emotional labor, and often working in under-resourced environments- can lead to chronic stress, fatigue, and reduced job satisfaction. Despite this widespread problem, many social workers lack formal training in recognizing early signs of burnout and developing effective strategies to prevent burnout and manage it.

Lack of Self-Care and Resilience-Building Skills: While the importance of self-care is widely acknowledged, there is often a gap between understanding its importance and practicing effective, consistent self-care routines. Social workers frequently prioritize their clients needs over their own, leading to emotional exhaustion and difficulty establishing healthy boundaries. Many professionals struggle to incorporate self-care into their busy schedules and may not be equipped with the practical tools needed to maintain resilience in the face of ongoing stress. This workshop addresses the need for education on self-care strategies that are realistic, actionable, and sustainable in the context of social work practice.

Unaddressed Secondary Trauma and Emotional Labor: Social Workers are regularly exposed to clients' trauma, which can lead to secondary traumatic stress (STS) or compassion fatigue. The emotional labor inherent in their work- constantly supporting clients through crises, trauma, and systemic challenges- can be compound burnout if left unaddressed. However, many social workers are not trained to recognize the effects of secondary trauma on their own mental health, nor do they have clear strategies for mitigating its impact. This workshop will provide targeted education on how to manage secondary trauma, build emotional resilience, and seek support when needed.

Inadequate Boundary Setting: Many social workers experience difficulty setting boundaries between their professional responsibilities and personal lives, leading work-life imbalance and eventual burnout. This challenge is often linked to the professional ethic of service and the emotional demands of client interactions, which can make it hard to "Switch off" after work hours. The workshop will help participants develop specific boundary-setting skills to prevent over commitment and maintain their mental well-being.

Educational Impact: This workshop will fill these critical gaps by providing social workers with:

  • Practical tools to recognize the early signs of burnout and secondary trauma.
  • Effective self-care strategies that align with the demands of their work.
  • Techniques for emotional resilience and boundary-setting that promote long-term well-being

By addressing these gaps, the workshop aims to enhance participants' professional longevity, improve their ability to manage stress, and ultimately lead to better outcomes for both the social workers and the communities they serve.

Learning Objectives:
1. Recognize the Signs and Causes of Burnout: Participants will identify the early signs and symptoms of burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma, as well as the specific stressors in social work that contribute to these conditions.

2. Develop Effective Burnout Prevention Strategies: Participants will create personalized action plan that includes practical self-care techniques and boundary-setting strategies to proactively prevent burnout.

3. Implement Sustainable Stress Management Practices: Participants will learn and apply actionable stress management practices to maintain emotional resilience and improve overall well-being in their professional roles.
