Course Descriptions and Learning Objectives

About 20 percent of those with ADHD will experience a depressive episode at some time in their lives. Depression can be independent of the ADHD, or it can result from ADHD symptoms. ADHD has a significant impact on the course of depression. Studies find more depressive symptoms and increased severity in individuals with ADHD than in non-ADHD counterparts. When you have ADHD and depression, the symptoms of both conditions are worse than if you had either disorder alone. In addition, empirical research studies have demonstrated that children, adolescents and adults with ADHD are at elevated risk for suicide. There are various reasons for this higher risk of depression and suicide amongst people with ADHD. In addition, using Dr. Thomas Joiner's Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicidal Behavior, the presenter will discuss how people with ADHD are at increased risk using Joiner's three-factor model. Too often ADHD is dismissed, undiagnosed or its impact is clinically underappreciated when clinicians are treating patients with depression and suicidal ideation. Suicide is also poorly understood. The speaker till provide rich clinical examples, empirical data and case studies to illustrate the information presented. Treatment interventions will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss the ADHD-specific risk factors for depression and suicide

2. Distinguish between ADHD symptoms and depression symptoms

3. Devise an ADHD-informed treatment plan for ADHD+Depression
